2023 Awards for Excellence in the Arts (AEA) ceremony

The Washington, DC Chapter of the National Society of Arts and Letters held its 2023 Awards for Excellence in the Arts (AEA) ceremony May 23, 2023, at the National Presbyterian Church, Washington, DC. More than 70 high school juniors from schools in the Washington Metropolitan Area were honored for excellence in NSAL’s six arts categories.

Grace Pressley, a junior at the Academy of the Holy Cross and a musical theater performer at Young Artists of America, receives an AEA from Edgar Russell III, NSAL Recording Secretary.

More than 60 area high school juniors were honored during the ceremony. It was the first in-person AEA ceremony held since 2019, due to the pandemic.

NSAL-DC Leadership Team member Sue Hamilton greets an honoree and presents her with an AEA certificate of merit for excellence in the arts.

Students were honored in each NSAL arts category: dance, drama, literature, music (instrumental and vocal), musical theater and visual art. More than 25 area high schools and performing arts programs participated in the 17th annual AEA. Thank you to the Nancy Peery Marriott Foundation for its continued support and making AEA free for all participants.

Sara Bock, a senior at Thomas S. Wooton High School and principal clarinet, Young Artists of America Orchestra, after performing Lecuonerías for unaccompanied clarinet, by Paquito D’Rivera.

Since this was our first post pandemic celebration, NSAL-DC honored several high school seniors along with more than 60 talented juniors. In addition to Bock, seniors Cadence Litteral (oboe, Dominion High School) and Aydin Smolover (saxophone, Washington Conservatory of Music) performed.
