NSAL-DC Governance, Standing and Financial Information
The National Society of Arts and Letters, Washington DC Chapter was incorporated as a 501(c)(3) public charity exempt from taxation under the laws of the Internal Revenue Service. It is qualified by its determination letter to receive tax deductible bequests, devises, transfers or gifts. As such, NSAL-DC, as an independent 501(c)(3), is required to file a Form 990 annually using its designated Employer ID number. This new incorporation designation was made by the IRS on April 12, 2022. NSAL-DC is similarly a non-profit business corporation incorporated in Washington, DC, by the Department of Consumer and Regulatory Affairs, Corporate Division.
The NSAL-DC is governed by a set of By-laws that were reviewed and updated as a part of this re-incorporation process. Currently, the organization is run by a Leadership Team consisting of four members who were named to undertake the re-incorporation and maintain operations. This Leadership Team will be replaced by a duly elected Board of Directors by July 1, 2023.
NSAL-DC operates in the District of Columbia, Maryland and Virginia and it holds fundraising licenses for each state. The corporate manages its own financial trust funds.
Previously, NSAL-DC was a subordinate chapter of the National Society of Arts and Letters (NSAL), a corporation that operates and supports competitions at the national level through numerous local chapters. Now, NSAL-DC continues as an independent chapter of the NSAL. When attempting to deal with NSAL-DC for financial or other purposes, persons should not confuse this local organization with the NSAL, and vice versa.
