Ava Liberace Presentation & Reception
Members and guests of NSAL-DC met on August 7, 2024 from 6:00-8:00 pm at the Colonnade Condominiums Party Room in NW Washington, DC.
DC Chapter president Ron Ivey gave a brief report on the state of the chapter and introduced Elisabeth Groninger, Vice President, Membership who plans membership events. Ron then introduced NSAL-DC Art Chair, Celia Josephs, who introduced our speaker, Ava Liberace.
Ava Elizabeth Liberace was this year’s DC Chapter winner, age 19-22 category, for the Winston Art Scholarship and subsequently won first place at the National Winston Art Competition presenting her work at National’s 2024 annual meeting in Illinois. She described her creative techniques that intertwine with her academic interests while scrolling through examples of her art work. She is a resident of Virginia and a student of studio art and biology at Wesleyan University. Ava follows in her father’s footsteps. Robert T. Liberace won this chapter’s award in painting in 1993 and he and family members were in attendance.
Ava’s art explores ecological systems and modes of embodiment through drawing. She is an artist based in Virginia and Connecticut and is completing her bachelor’s of art in studio art and biology at Wesleyan University. Her compositions pay tribute to ecological systems and family and friends. She uses scientific inquiries and close academic drawing to investigate environmental relationships such as fungal networks and the climate crisis. She experiments with abstraction to recontextualize the body in fantastic landscapes to explore what it means to be human, and to redefine the body’s relationship with systems of interconnection. She has shown her works in London, UK, Sarasota, Florida, Alexandria, Virginia, and New York City.
